About Liszt

You have recorded works of Franz Liszt for your first CD.
Why that?

The main impulse was my special interest and the deep affection that I have for this musical giant, Franz Liszt. As a child I was fascinated by his personality which I had encountered in a movie about his life. His great virtuosity impressed me deeply and I wanted to be able to play as well as him. I had sheet music of his rhapsodies at home and I always dreamed of them.

Today I am a grown-up pianist and I have fulfilled this dream playing his works.

What is it that fascinates you the most about him?

More than any other composer, I have mostly worked with Liszt‘s music. I always become enthusiastic anew about the unbelievable opus of his. Especially fascinating for me is his broad thinking and his cosmopolitical personality. He was someone far ahead of his time with his ideas and his thoughts. This you can‘t find with any other composer to such a degree.

You said that Liszt also performed in Croatia, in Zagreb?

Yes. His way as pianist and cosmopolitan also lead him to Zagreb. This was in 1846 and it was the year of two great cultural events for the Croatians: the first Croatian opera by Vatroslav Lisinski was first performed and Liszt gave his concerts. In the castle of Samobor, a city next to Zagreb where he had also played I learned that he had been engaged to play for supporting the Hungarian party in Croatia which was at that time part of the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy. There is a museum at this castle where by the way they display his autograph signature. Another interesting fact is that some works of his opus have Croatian titles.
